IT was TS Eliot’s fear that he was irredeemably dull. The Nobel Prize-winning poet described himself as a “mild-mannered man safely entrenched behind his typewriter” and once wrote: “How unpleasant to meet Mr Eliot! With a bobtail cur, in a coat of fur, and a ­porpentine cat, and a wopsical hat: How unpleasant to meet Mr Eliot!”
