For the composer of Pomp and Circumstance, it could be seen as a fitting epitaph. The final love of Sir Edward Elgar wrote in a posthumous letter to him that he was “self-engrossed, self-enamoured ... in love with your brilliant dazzling self, and glorious in your supreme egotism”.
