Business and economics books rarely compete with novels for drama, but the credit crunch has changed the landscape. John Lanchester sat down to write a novel about the financial crisis, then realised that the truth provided a better plot line. Whoops! is the funniest and most accessible of all the books written about our economic woes. The author, the consummate non-expert, asks the questions we forgot to ask when our houses were making more money than we were.
