As a clue to a promised death, “will you help me take the New Year’s banner off the roof?” was a solid one. Nigel’s despairing shriek as he plunged from the icy, windy tiles atop Lower Loxley Hall, had been inevitable from the moment his wife, Elizabeth, had warned him not to go up there. Nigel was never a man to worry about Health and Safety, but didn’t he realise that he had delivered himself of one of those pre-terminal “I love you” moments to his wife in only the previous episode?
