T wo Picassos, a Braque and a Matisse are being flogged next week by a leading gallery. It’s not the Tate or the National Gallery getting rid of some masterpieces. The paintings have been put up for sale at Christie’s in London by the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago, which tells me “they are being deaccessioned to benefit the funds devoted to our acquisitions”. It argues that it already has works by these artists, so feels no huge loss.
