The Saturday Big Tent Wedding Party by Alexander McCall Smith

By Marcel Berlins
How fares Mma Ramotswe these days? Botswana’s most famous citizen and The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency that she founded are, astonishingly, into their 12th appearance, and show no signs of flagging. The formula has not changed a whit, the characters are happily set in their ways, showing no signs of ambition, progress or emotional stress. Mma Ramotswe’s main role is to dispense wisdom with charm. The detection is secondary. A cattle farmer hires her to investigate a spate of cruel, fatal attacks on his animals. Otherwise, she’s occupied in trying to persuade the presumed father of a young girl’s twins to accept his parental responsibilities, and in seeing the ghost of a battered white car that she once loved but had to give up.
