Sailing on the high seas

By Caroline Hendrie
Hands-on tall ship adventures The mission of the 200ft square-rigged Stavros S Niachos is to show that everyone can go to sea. Voyages for adults help to finance others for disadvantaged and disabled young people. If you are 18-80 (the maximum age for open-sea voyages is 75) and want to test your sea legs, choose from various itineraries around the British Isles this summer. Join a voyage as one of 48 crew, sharing a six-bunk cabin and taking turns to keep watch, climb the rigging, cook the meals and other tasks. For example, a five-night East Coast Cruise from Great Yarmouth to Blyth, in Northumberland, with a wildlife expert on board, departing on June 12, is £399pp. Details : 02392 832055, www.tallships.org .
