Neil Jordan, best known as an award-winning film director, is also a highly regarded author. The Drowned Detective is excellent, at one level traditional noir fiction but with added emotional depth, intelligence, wonderful writing and a touch of the supernatural. Haunting, an overused adjective, is justified here.
