As the economy sinks, so does Government

Out of touch, disunited, uncommunicative, dithering, lacking direction: not since the dark days of John Major has any government looked so estranged from the electorate as Labour does in today's YouGov poll for The Daily Telegraph. We must go back to 1987, the apogee of Thatcherism, to find Labour in such a parlous state. This is an extraordinary turnaround given the position Gordon Brown was in just last summer when he took over the premiership. It was widely assumed then, and still is, that had he held a general election in the autumn, he would have won.
