Government blows hot and cold over biofuels

With oil prices soaring this week to almost $120 (£61) a barrel, the Government has given its second sign in as many months that it is going off the idea of biofuels. After last month's Budget decision to remove the duty differential on biofuels by 2010 (which saves the Treasury £550 million), Prime Minister Gordon Brown said this week that the UK would be pushing for a change in the EU's target to increase the proportion of biofuels to 10 per cent of all road fuels used by 2020.
