Well, somebody had to be shortlisted. And Rushdie, Coetzee, Barker, Farrell, Gordimer and Carey is a pretty hard list to argue with — even if fans of Farrell’s much-admired and now seldom-read work will feel annoyed that the critics at William Hill have it at 80-1.
