Tax and spend is over

It is not surprising that ministers have been insisting that Gordon Brown will lead Labour to victory at the next election. Yes, they admitted, people were angry about high taxes and high prices. But, they went on, Mr Brown's reputation for economic competence is a decade old. If he is getting brickbats for the squeeze today, he will surely get the bouquets if and when there is a recovery.
