Ex-chief of Scots' socialists charged

By Andrew Bolger
Tommy Sheridan, the former leader of the Scottish Socialist party who won £200,000 in a defamation action against the News of the World, has been charged with perjury. The investigation was launched after Mr Sheridan won a civil action before a jury 17 months ago over the newspaper's allegations that he cheated on his wife and took part in orgies. His wife, Gail, has also been charged with perjury. A preliminary hearing of their case has been scheduled for February 26 at the High Court in Edinburgh.
