Universities 'must double annual fees to £6,500'

University vice-chancellors want to more than double student fees to £6,500 a year to protect teaching standards. Sources said last night that a government review later this year is bound to lead to a rise in fees whoever wins the next election – against a backdrop of warnings that a university education will become unaffordable for poorer students. Some vice-chancellors want a substantially larger increase from the present level of £3,145 a year.
